The Therapy Dogs Program was started in Ontario and has tested various breeds who now visit facilities such as hospitals, nursing and retirement homes, schools and children's facilities where visits from Therapy Dogs are eagerly anticipated.
There is also a need in rehabilitation, long term care, altzheimer and palliative care units, as well as supporting psychiatric work and housebound persons.
Therapy Dogs are tested for both temperment and suitability and their owners receive extensive orientation with regard to a strict visiting protocol.
The St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program is unique in that the same dog and handler visit the same people at the same time on a regular basis.
It has been proven that petting, affection and regular contact with a dog has helped provide a calming and theraputic effect.
The dogs are all ages, sizes and breeds. The dogs are always clean and well groomed. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and are dedicated to the St. John motto for the service of mankind.
